Summer 2008 update: You may have already noticed that Grove Music Online changed its look recently. After extensive work to make technical and editorial changes, Grove was re-launched as part of Oxford Music Online, which also provides access to The Oxford Companion to Music and The Oxford Dictionary of Music, 2nd ed. rev. You may search each of these products individually or in combination.

In its new structure, a single ‘primary’ article has been established for all subjects in Grove. These articles will be updated. Articles on the same subject from specialist Grove Dictionaries, such as The New Grove Dictionary of Opera and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz are available on the site through a link from the primary article. These articles are referred to as ‘archived’ because they are static articles, not subject to regular updating and are clearly listed at the top left, at the beginning of the article.

With the restructured Grove Music Online, subscribers to Classical Music Online or the Database of Recorded Music (DRAM) benefit from links in Grove articles directly to those sites. We subscribe to both these products. There are also “find it at Stanford” links in the bibliographies that will ease searching whether we own the titles listed there.

The Encyclopedia of Popular Music is prominently mentioned on the OMO site. Access to it requires a separate subscription. After a preview of the product, we decided not to subscribe at this time. A copy of the print version is kept in the reference room.

Future Additions:
Look in early 2009 for the addition of Richard Taruskin's Oxford History of Western Music.

The second edition of The New Grove Dictionary of American Music is underway. All of the new and revised articles for this print work will appear also as a part of Grove Music Online.
