Matrix, women's religious communities, 500-1500

The American Historical Association's guide to historical literature, 3rd ed. (1995, 2 v., Z6201.A55, Info Center) has good coverage of recent (1960-1995) monographs on social and economic history in its sections on Medieval Europe, "Byzantium", and the "Islamic World to 1500". It lists primarily works published since its 1961 second ed.; there are brief annotations.

Women
For women, sexuality, and gender, Medieval Feminist Index offers journal articles, book reviews, and essays in books about women. TheJournal of Women's History Stanford only occasionally publishes bibliographic reviews of medieval topics, e.g., Schaus & Stuard, "Citizens of No Mean City: Medieval Women's History" 6(1994):170-198. Also see "Studies of Women, Family and Gender," in vol. 2 of Reformation Europe: a guide to research (BR430.R442, Lane Rm); encyclopedia articles on gender, family and sexuality in the 16th century can be found in The Oxford encyclopedia of the Reformation (BR302.8.O93 1996, Info Center).
