Manuscripts

General, national or multiple library guides | Special topics | Individual libraries

N.B.: Other than internet publications, only manuscript and archival catalogs shelved in the Medieval Studies Room, Lane Room, or Information Center are mentioned herein (with a few exceptions). Most others are shelved in Green Stacks. Archival guides are normally classed in the Library of Congress CD section, library guides largely in the Z700's, and library manuscript catalogs in the Z6600's.

PROCESSUS MARTINI P.[apae] IV [aliis II] contra Petru[m]
Arragonae et Palaeologum
, ca. 1281

Information on archives and manuscript repositories worldwide is available on the web; also search Google for individual repositories. International Directory of Archives (1992), shelved in the Information Center, offers a handy, consise overview of any particular country's archives at the national and local levels. And a key reference source for identifying manuscript catalogs remains Kristeller, Latin Mauscript Books before 1600, 4 ed., 1993. There are two related microfilm sets:

  • A Microfilm Corpus of the Indexes to Printed Catalogues of Latin Manuscripts before 1600 (1982), includes microfilm of many of the published catalogs listed in Kristeller. Berkeley and Stanford also own many of the original print editions. The Lane Room copy of Kristeller's third edition is annotated with reel numbers of the items contained in this microfilm collection, which is located at UC Berkeley library and available on interlibrary loan. A copy is not owned by Stanford.
  • A Microfilm Corpus of Unpublished Inventories of Latin Manuscripts through 1600 [MFILM n.s. 8008; guide Z6605.L3.M54 MTXT].

The 4th ed. of Kristeller should include the entries from Indices librorum: Catalogues anciens et modernes . . ., vol.I. 1977-1983, vol.II. 1984-1990. Consult the continuing lists of newly published cataolgs: 'Catalogues recents de MSS.' in Analecta Bollandiana; 'Cataloghi di manoscritti' in the annual volumes of Medioevo latino . . .

Manuscripts and manuscript microfilms and facsimiles can also be found in the large library union catalogs RLIN (Archives subfile) and World Catalog. Try searching by manuscript number if other approaches fail, e.g., BODLEY 764. The Hill Monastic Manuscript Library contains over 70,000 records. l'IRHT Paris-Orléans) has film of 55,000 manuscripts. Other large collections of film.

PROCESSUS MARTINI P.[apae] IV [aliis II] contra Petru[m]
Arragonae et Palaeologum
, ca. 1281

Many repertories of Authors & Texts give details on manuscripts.

Aristotle: See Minio-Paluello on reception and transmission of Aristotle in Dictionary of scientific biography, Q141.D5, IC.. Also Verbeke (1986) "Répertoires des commentaires latins médiévaux sur A.," pp.141-153; and D'Alverny (1986) "Editions de textes," pp.124-125, both in L'Homme et son univers au moyen âge, vol.1 (B721.C55, Stacks). Aristoteles latinus. Codices, 3 vols., 1939-61, Z6616.A75.L3, Lane Rm. Catalogo di manoscritti filosofici biblioteche italiane. 1, 1980+ v. 1-5 to date. Z6651.P5C37, Stacks. This work aims to record any text bearing on the history of thought from the 6th-16th c.; the emphasis is on commentaries of Aristotle. False attributions and spurious texts:

*ALD: Aristoteles Latinus database. ALD-1, ALD-2. Lane Rm. The electronic database is not identical to the printed edition, as it will not contain the prefaces in which the manuscript tradition is described, nor will it include its apparatus of variant readings, their Greek-Latin comparative apparatus, or its bilingual indexes. The specific utility of this electronic edition lies in the fact that it provides an integrated database of all the medieval translations of Aristotle's works. The electronic and the printed editions are thus intended to be complementary.

Plato: Plato Manuscripts: a new index, 1968 (Z6616.P57.Y35, Lane Rm.); Plato Manuscripts: a catalogue of microfilms in the Plato Microfilm Project, Yale University Library, 3 vols., 1968-1973 (Z6616.P57.Y3 f, Stacks). For pre-1500 mss: Plato Latinus, 1940+ (PA4280.A4.R5).

Dated and Datable Manuscripts

These are catalogs by country that continue and supplement Lowe (1934-72) Codices Latini Antiquiores; A Palaeographical Guide to Latin Manuscripts prior to the Ninth Century, 12 v.; Codices latini antiquiores; a palaeographical guide to Latin manuscripts prior to the ninth century. Part II: Great Britain and Ireland. Edited by E. A. Lowe. 2nd ed. Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1972. See Boyle, Medieval Latin Palaeography: A Bibliographical Guide [Z106.B68, Lane Rm] for a list of titles in this series.

The following sets are shelved in the Medieval Studies Rm (351 East Wing, Green Library). Check Socrates for the most up-to-date holdings:
