Sounds of Renaissance Florence: Music Inspired by The Burke Collection of Early Italian Miniatures

On the evening of Jan. 15, 2020, the Munger Rotunda in Green Library was filled with the musical echoes of Renaissance Italy, drawn from the liturgical manuscripts found in the Burke Collection, and from the secular song that would have rung out in the courts and streets of the cities represented in the display cases in the Peterson Gallery.

Led by Jesse Rodin, Associate Professor of Music, and featuring the vocal ensemble Cut Circle alongside Stanford students, a rich and rousing program launched The Illuminated Page exhibit to a packed audience.

This video feature, produced by Justin Warren, filmmaker, and Evan Shwartz, captures the excitement of the performance alongside interviews and background information with Dr. Rodin, the performers, and Stanford scholars.

While pandemic events led to a premature and quiet close for this exhibition, we can remember and relive the vibrant opening night and look forward to welcoming visitors to our current Special Collections exhibition when restrictions start to ease.
