The ARS welcomes Benjamin Bates

The Stanford Archive of Recorded Sound is pleased to announce the appointment of Benjamin Bates to the position of Operations Manager.

Since 2011 Benjamin has served as Archive Specialist, Interim Operations Manager, and Processing Archivist in the Archive of Recorded Sound as well as Cataloging Assistant in the Music Library.  Between 2010 and 2013 he also served as Library Page in the Chief of Branches Division of the San Francisco Public Library and Digital Archivist/Docent in the Lucretia Little History Room of the Mill Valley Public Library. Benjamin holds a Master of Library and Information Science degree from San Jose State University, a Master of Public Administration degree from San Francisco State University, and a Bachelor of Arts, with a Special Major in Audio Technology, from San Francisco State University.  He has completed further coursework in Metadata for Digital Collections, Digital Forensics, and Arrangement/Description of Electronic Records, and he has enhanced his cataloging skills through the Music Cataloging Institute of the University of North Texas. 

In addition to library and archive work, Benjamin has also worked as a Principal Analyst at Bates & Mays Solutions (Carlsbad, CA), Elections Trainer, County of Orange Registrar of Voters (Santa Ana, CA), Graduate WASC Accreditation Assistant, California State University (Long Beach), and Audio-Visual Technician/Stage Manager, San Francisco State University Department of Creative Arts where he supervised the successful completion of over 200 productions, provided audio‐visual expertise in a variety of venues for recitals, recording sessions, screenings, theatrical productions, and ceremonies, and partnered with diverse constituencies that included community leaders, production companies, designers, university faculty, and administration on numerous events. 

Benjamin holds memberships in the American Library Association (ALA), Society of American Archivists (SAA), Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC), Music Library Association (MLA), and Society of California Archivists (SCA).  We are very happy to have Benjamin working with us as Operations Manager in the Archive of Recorded Sound.
