Art + Science + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon
On Thursday, March 14, 2019, from 10 am to 4:30 pm, the Bowes Art & Architecture Library (355 Roth Way, on the Stanford campus) will host an Art + Science + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in recognition of International Women’s Day (March 8), Women’s History Month (all of March), and Pi Day (3.14). Come when you want, and stay as long as you want! This will be the third annual Art+Feminism Wikipedia event hosted by the Stanford Libraries, and the first time we’ve broadened our scope to include women in the sciences.
The goal of the event is to improve Wikipedia’s coverage of women in the arts and sciences, and to encourage female editorship. The edit-a-thon will include tutorials and support for beginning Wikipedians, a team of experienced librarians for research assistance, high-quality reference materials, a community of like-minded Wikipedia authors and editors, and some nice refreshments. People of all gender identities and expressions are invited to participate, with a special welcome to transgender and cisgender women.
In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female. This lack of female participation has led to an alarming dearth of content about women, including in the arts and sciences, in popular online research tools. Art+Feminism is based in the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and its Edit-a-thons and other initiatives around the world have made an impact on the gender gap through crucial improvements to art- and feminism-related subjects on Wikipedia. Since 2014, over over 7,000 people at more than 500 events around the world have participated in Art+Feminism’s Edit-a-thons, resulting in the creation and improvement of more than 11,000 articles on Wikipedia.
Participants in the Stanford edit-a-thon should bring their own laptops. If you do not own a laptop but are affiliated with Stanford, you can borrow a laptop from the Tech Desk at the Learning Hub@Lathrop. There is a limit to how many new Wikipedia accounts can be created in one day at the same IP address. If you do not already have one, you're strongly encouraged to create your own Wikipedia account prior to coming to the event. If you're unable to do this prior to March 14, we will be happy to help you set up your account on the day. And please log in via the Event Dashboard to make sure your contributions are counted toward the Art+Feminism campaign.
Admission is free, and this event is open to faculty, students, staff, and all community members!
