Blog topic: Digital preservation
In January, the ePADD project team began work on the current phase of development to the software, with funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The focus for this first quarter of the year is on the redevelopment of the ePADD’s attachment review feature. Attachments are a rich source of information in an email collection, providing context to the archive owner’s work, communications, and relationships.

TL;DR: The Stanford Media Preservation Lab (SMPL) and the Stanford Digital Repository (SDR) have together reached a major milestone with over half a petabyte of preserved AV media content accessioned in the repository. This summer, SMPL expects to complete working through the backlog of digital audio and video files accumulated over the past decade.
Lots of interesting research is deposited into the Stanford Digital Repository every month, but when the research is about crocodiles, you know we have to know more!
While there are at least 26 species of crocodiles around today, many more forms of crocodiles have existed over the past 250 million years. Extinct crocodiles include those that were both much larger and much smaller than those living today.
I had the pleasure of attending the recent open house held at Academy Hall on Stanford's Redwood City campus, which houses the Media Preservation Lab, Conservation Services, and much of the Department of Special Collections. Here are some things that caught my eye:
It's likely not news to you that Stanford researchers are undertaking all manner of cutting-edge and groundbreaking work. Applied Physics graduate student Aaron Sharpe is one such researcher who has become intrigued by a single-atom-thick layer of carbon called graphene that he says has, "continuously shaken up the field of condensed matter physics." Graphene sheets, as well as stacks of these sheets, show "unique and tunable electronic properties." We see why Aaron couldn't resist! We talked to Aaron about the research he and his colleagues have been undertaking with graphene and that has recently been published in Science.
Outreach by Stanford science librarians led Aaron to the Stanford Digital Repository (SDR), which he used to make the data and code for this publication publicly-available. "We chose the SDR because it was an easy process to make our data publicly available and permanent and to obtain a digital object identifier (DOI) to reference it in our publication." We completely agree with Aaron's comment that "with any publication, it is important that the data be publicly available."
