New discovery tool to search for funding opportunities, grant awards, and philanthropy news

Looking for funding opportunities?  Want to see what grants have been awarded? Or, are you interested in scanning philanthropy news and documents to see if they provide insight into a funding proposal you are working on?  If the answer is yes to any of these questions, then you should check out the new Funding Resources Search tool that lets you search multiple resources at one time.   Access is limited to current students, faculty, and staff at Stanford.

Kevin Kishimoto, Music Metadata Librarian, Stanford University Libraries, and Tracey Snyder, Music Catalog and Instruction Librarian, Cornell University Libraries, were presented with the Richard S. Hill Award for the best article on music librarianship or article of a music-bibliographic nature, at the 2018 annual meeting of the Music Library Association in Portland, Oregon.  Their article, “Popular Music in FRBR and RDA: Toward User-Friendly and Cataloger-Friendly Identification of Works,” Cataloging & Classification Quarterly  54, no. 1 (2016): 60-86 is available online to the Stanford community.

Ashley Jester named as new Assistant Director in SERG

Ashley Jester will assume the position of Assistant Director in the Science and Engineering Resource Group (SERG) on February 1st. In this position she will manage the Terman Engineering Library and the Li and Ma Science Library. The establishment of this position is part of a reorganization of SERG that was conducted in a response to the consolidation of STEM libraries at Stanford. The new Assistant Director position parallels the position held by Julie Sweetkind-Singer in her role as Assistant Director, Geospatial, Cartographic & Science Data Services.

Well over 200 staff members attended the annual Stanford Libraries Holiday Party on December 18th at the Schwab Center.  Good food, drinks, and fun were in abundance! In addition to providing an opportunity to celebrate the past year, the holiday party is a time for University Librarian Michael Keller to recognize staff celebrating employment anniversaries. Congratulations to all!

Guadalajara’s International Book Fair, 31 Years Strong

In its 31 years, the Guadalajara International Book Fair / Feria Internacional del Libro (FIL) has become the most important book event in the Spanish-speaking world showcasing the hemisphere’s publishing output and hosting multiple panels: from author readings to round table discussion on current events. Opening every Thanksgiving weekend, FIL received over 800,000 visitors by the time it ended on December 3rd.

We recently completed digitizing the many contact sheets in the Bob Fitch Photography Archive. Thanks Griselda Mercado!  And thanks to Michelle Paquette and the team at the Digital Library Systems and Services, the contact sheets are now available online. The Bob Fitch Photography Archive consists of the work of photojournalist and activist Bob Fitch documenting the civil rights movement, farmworkers movement, peace movement and other social justice causes from the 1960s to the mid-2000s.
