The East Asia Library holds a vast array of special collection materials, ranging from thirteenth century scrolls to contemporary ephemera.  Most materials are in Chinese, Japanese or Korean and more information about them can be found under the tabs, "Chinese collections," "Japanese collections," and "Korean collections." 

Using the East Asia Library's Special Collections

Access to the East Asia Library's Special Collections is restricted to the following Stanford ID cardholders: students, post-docs, professors (including emeriti), all staff, fellows, and Stanford visiting scholars. You must first find the materials in SearchWorks.  Some EAL special collections materials can be paged through Aeon.  The first time you use Aeon, you will need to create a Stanford Libraries Aeon account.  After creating an account, you will be able to page materials to be reviewed at the East Asia Library's special collections reading room.  Some materials, especially in-process collections, may not have an Aeon request link.  In such cases, please contact the relevant librarian to request to review them. Once your materials arrive, we asked that you wash your hands before handling the materials in the East Asia Library's Special Collections reading room.  Prior to viewing any special collections materials, you must carefully read and sign the below form.

Special Collections and University Archives Statement on Potentially Harmful Language in Cataloging and Archival Description

We acknowledge that description is not neutral, nor are we. We aim to describe our materials in an informative and accurate manner that is respectful to the individuals and communities who create, use, and are represented in the collections we manage. However, Stanford Special Collections and University Archives staff created many of our catalog records and finding aids years or even decades ago, and what constitutes appropriate description varies with context, time, and the positionality of the description creator. In addition, because it is common practice to re-use language provided by creators, former owners, and vendors, and to re-use catalog records from other libraries, users may encounter offensive or harmful language in our descriptions.

We are implementing practices to address offensive or harmful language as part of routine description work, and we also encourage users to provide feedback to help us address these concerns. We recognize that terminology evolves over time and that efforts to create respectful and inclusive descriptions must be ongoing.
