Hohbach Hall is now open

The renovated first floor of Green Library’s East Wing reopened Monday, January 3, 2022, as the newly named Hohbach Hall. The makeover was made possible by the Harold and Marilyn Hohbach Foundation and has created a modern and inspiring space for research, collaboration, and study. 

Anchored within Hohbach Hall is the Silicon Valley Archives, which now has a physical space for students and scholars to engage with archival material focused on the history of Silicon Valley. Library patrons will be welcomed by a combined service desk that includes circulation and privileges staff, as well as reference librarians. 

Designed by CAW Architects, the space offers myriad ways for patrons to engage with the space. Down the central corridor of Hohbach Hall is a promenade of exhibition cases with a walnut ceiling overhead mimicking a sine wave, a subtle nod to the audio oscillator developed in the region. A large presentation space is at the center of the Hall and outfitted for events and seminars. Sprinkled around the presentation space are group and individual study desks, several with views looking out to the Red Fountain or green spaces. Librarians will also be able to welcome students, faculty, and library guests into a new secure Special Collections room to examine rare objects and treasures. 

With the opening of Hohbach Hall, students and scholars have additional study and collaboration spaces, and visitors can discover a variety of objects, ephemera, and archives from the Stanford Libraries collection.

Green Library entry limited to Bing Wing

The first floor of the East Wing (Coupa Café entrance) of Green Library will be inaccessible until early 2022 for Hohbach Hall renovations. Please plan to use the Bing Wing entrance (opposite the Centennial Fountain and Main Quad) to access Green Library. The Circulation and Privileges Desk and Information Center Desk have relocated near the Jonsson Social Science Reading Room in the Bing Wing.   

Entry will require that patrons take the Stanford Health Check and display their Health Check badge prior to entering any library location. Face coverings are to be worn at all times and adherence of social distancing is required while inside any Stanford Libraries location.

Hohbach Hall preparations underway

In preparation for the transformation of the first floor of Green Library's East Wing, Stanford Libraries have already begun relocating collections, notably our current periodicals. On this page and in our libraries you will find additional notifications about material moves, service relocations and entrance closures, which will begin in earnest in mid-November 2020 and run through the completion of the project in January 2022. Please continue to monitor this page for updates and progress on the project.

East Wing entrance closing during construction
The east entrance of Green Library (near Coupa Cafe and the red fountain) and access to Green Library’s East Wing will close from December 12, 2020 through early January 2022 while Hohbach Hall construction is underway. Please plan to enter Green Library using the Bing Wing entrance, located opposite the main quad and the centennial fountain.

Other temporary changes to services
The Circulation & Privileges and the Information Center desks will be relocated to the area near the Jonsson Reading Room and West Stacks entrance on the first floor of the corridor connecting the East and Bing Wings.  

Beginning in the summer of 2021, the first floor of the East Wing of the Cecil H. Green Library will be transformed into a modern hub for study, teaching, exploration and learning as a result of a generous gift made by the Harold C. and Marilyn A. Hohbach Foundation. The new space, which will be renamed Hohbach Hall, will include:

• The main service points currently in the space, including the Circulation & Privileges and Information Center desks, and IC Classroom
• A new presentation space that can seat 70 individuals for talks, events and programs
• A new Special Collections classroom where rare and unique objects can be examined by groups and classes
• An exhibitions promenade that will feature items for the history of Silicon Valley

The Libraries’ Silicon Valley Archives will be relocated to the first floor, allowing its curator, historian and staff to be readily available to support the teaching, research and learning needs of students and faculty. 

The renovations are also offering opportunities to update study spaces on the first floor and improve patron services with a new combined circulation and information desk.
