Limited access to library spaces

Limited access

Some library spaces are open, by appointment only. To comply with safety guidelines, we can only permit a limited number of people in these spaces and hours have been reduced

  • Green by appointment only
  • Special Collections by appointment only
  • East Asia by appointment only
  • Marine Biology (Miller)
  • Hoover Library & Archives by appointment only

These spaces in Green remain closed: the Center for Interdisciplinary Digital Research and the David Rumsey Map Center.

Who can book an appointment?

Current Stanford ID cardholders in the groups listed below are eligible to make an appointment.

  • Graduate and undergraduate students
  • Post-docs
  • Professors, including emeriti
  • Staff
  • Fellows
  • Stanford Visiting Scholars


How does it work?

Green and East Asia

  1. If you are eligible, select the “Schedule access to...” option in My Account.
  2. From the drop-down list, select the branch you want to visit.
  3. Choose a date and time to enter the branch.
  4. Before you arrive, review our entry requirements.
  5. When you arrive, be prepared to show:
    • your Health Check status
    • your current Stanford University ID card
    • your appointment confirmation

Scheduled entry times avoid crowds and long waits at the entrance. Once you are in the library, you are welcome to remain until closing. The Information Center desk is staffed and providing support. Please note that access to Green Library does not include access to Special Collections and group study rooms are for individual use only. 


Special Collections

  1. Place a request for archival materials in SearchWorks. This includes materials from:
    • Special Collections
    • David Rumsey Map Center
    • locked stacks of the Art & Architecture (Bowes) Library
  2. We will review the request and transfer the materials to the Field Reading Room of Green Library.
  3. When the materials are ready, we will ask you to schedule an appointment via My Account.
  4. Before you arrive, review our entry requirements and the Field Reading Room procedures.
  5. When you arrive, be prepared to show:
    • your Health Check status
    • your current Stanford University ID card
    • your appointment confirmation

Each appointment is 3 hours, with one researcher per table. We will hold your materials in the Field Reading Room for 14 days.
