Proxy borrowing

Faculty may designate up to two proxies (typically a hired research assistant or department staff) who may use a Stanford Libraries Proxy Borrowing Card to borrow library materials in their name. The faculty sponsor is responsible for all materials borrowed by proxies, including fines and fees, recall notices, and overdue reminders.

Who is eligible?

  • Stanford University faculty
  • Emeritus faculty
  • Stanford-appointed
  • Visiting Professors
  • Academic staff with a teaching appointment

Who may serve as a proxy?

  • Regular Stanford University employees
  • Registered Stanford students
  • Hired research assistants (must have a current Stanford ID)

What is the loan period for materials checked out by proxies?

Materials will be due using the same loan period as the sponsor or upon Proxy Borrowing Card expiration, whichever occurs first.

How long is the proxy borrowing card valid?

Proxy Cards are valid for one year (renewable) and can be canceled anytime. Proxy Borrowing Cards can be suspended or revoked if the privilege is abused.

How can I view materials checked out to proxies?

Faculty sponsors can view proxy charges, requested items, or bills at My Account. Proxy cardholders may view the same information via My Account Log in with PIN and their proxy card Library ID number.

How do I apply for a Proxy Borrowing Card?

The faculty sponsor must complete the Proxy Application for first-time and renewing proxies.
